Welcome to our blog!

Multilingualism in Society is a blog written by 2nd-year BA students taking the course “Introduction to Multilingualism in society” at the University of Lausanne. Each short post will briefly introduce a topic, discuss the main findings in recent academic studies and close with a take-home message for a non-academic audience.

“The last two decades have seen a rapidly growing interest, internationally, in multilingualism and multilingual literacy and in the ways in which multilingualism is represented in the media and in public discourse. This is largely due to the significant linguistic, cultural and demographic changes that have been ushered in by globalization, transnational population flows, the spread of new technology and the changing political and economic landscape of different regions of the world.

(Martin-Jones, Blackledge and Creese, 2012, p.1)

As we all live in Switzerland, you will find some entries that deal specifically with issues that relevant to Swiss multilingualism. We hope that you find our site interesting to learn more about multilingualism in our contemporary societies.
